Yesterday was a memorable day for 2001 Duke national champ Shane Battier.  The three-time National Defensive Player of the Year hit the game-winning shot to deliver the first playoff victory in Memphis Grizzlies franchise history and his wife gave birth to the couple’s second child.  Battier scored 10 points (4-5 FG, 2-2 3pt) in Memphis’ upset win over top-seeded San Antonio.

“This is awesome,” Battier said after the game in the locker room.  “I’m real happy for the city.  Beale Street will really be pumping tonight.  Most of the guys don’t understand the history and the heartache the city has gone through.”

Shortly later, he tweeted:

As Shane’s former coach Jeff Van Gundy said yesterday during the Lakers/Hornets broadcast, “No one deserves success more than Shane Battier.”  Great to see that college basketball’s all-time winningest player just keeps on winning.  Here is Shane’s big shot against the Spurs:

Lastly, while we’re on the subject of Mr. Battier — Here’s a great interview with Shane which includes some comments on his Duke days.
