Turning Point

Findlay’s only lead was 2-1 before we steadily pulled away.  After a slow first half offensively, we shot out of the gates in the second half on a 24-4 run that put the game well out of reach.  A Brian Zoubek free throw capped the run to make it 60-27 with around 12:30 left.

Blue Devil Ballers

Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer led the way offensively, scoring 20 and 19 points respectively.  Kyle (8-12 FG) also pulled down nine boards and dished out four assists.  Jon (6-13 FG) had three boards and three steals.

Duke Data

25% – Shooting percentage of Findlay in the second half

+21 – Duke’s rebounding margin in the game (59-38)

4 – Blue Devils who secured at least nine boards (Miles, LT, Zoubs, Kyle)

12 – Blocks by Duke, led by Miles (3)

Coach K’s Comments

“Tonight was a good game for us.  One of the reasons we schedule Findlay was because they have so much pride in their program and they’re very well coached.  Whenever you play a Division II team, you’re going to be taller, but they spread us out really well.  I thought overall we did a good job tonight.  I thought it was Andre’s best game tonight even though he didn’t shoot the ball well.  He was animated, played hard.  It was one of those games where he didn’t score, but I think he played well.  That’s a big plus for us.  And Lance gives us a lot of energy.  He’s all over the place.  I thought Kyle was rushing things in the first half and in the second half everything he did was right.  We wanted to play the first half without Nolan because he’s going to miss the first two ball games.  Just to get a dry run of how we need to play during those two games is good for us.  I’m not sure we would start the same team because we started I think the biggest team in the history of our program.  Especially when you’re playing against a little bit smaller of a team, it’s probably good to mix that up a little bit. I was pleased.  I thought overall we did a good job tonight.”

Locker Room Reaction

Jon gave the squad a B-, suggesting the need to continue to improve.  “It was about a B -.  We had some good moments, but we have a lot of things to work on.  It was a decent job overall tonight.”  Kyle added, “Team wise, we could have played better.  Findlay was a good team, especially for their division.  They were national champs last year and they had a couple guys coming back.”

Sixth Man

The Crazies were at their loudest during a strong Duke defensive sequence in the second half.  Jon had a block with 13:48 left, then Mason added a swat with 13:10 left followed by a Zoubs rejected with 13:07 remaining.  Mason then missed a one-handed power slam off a missed shot that would blown the roof off the gym.  Spotted in the crowd during the game was a student wearing a completely green body suit.  Apparently, he was Green Man?

Notes

*Nolan Smith will miss the first two regular-season games as a penalty for playing in an unsanctioned summer league.  As a result, the coaches played the first half with Nolan on the bench to adjust to having him out of the lineup.

*Next up: the regular-season starts on November 13th when UNC-Greensboro comes to Durham.
