A Whole New Season

January 10, 2008

Posted by Coach Collins under AHC Journal

Greetings to all of our Blue Devil Fans.  Happy New Year to everyone.  It’s really been great to be back playing after our 17-day layoff during the holidays.  We felt that the break would be really good for our players to get recharged and refreshed for the second half of the season, and hope that it will pay dividends as the season winds down in February and March.  Time will tell if that proves to be true.

We just got back from Philadelphia where we came away with a hard-fought victory over Temple at the Wachovia Center.  There was an amazing crowd at the game with alot of Duke fans.  It’s always great for our guys to see what a tremendous following we have all over the country.  Some of the ushers at the arena told us that it was the best crowd they had seen in that building all year, including Sixers and Flyers games.  For us to get the win shorthanded on the road, without Brian and Lance, was a good confidence builder for the team. Our bench really stepped up, most notably, Taylor King and Nolan Smith, and gave us great minutes and production.  Hopefully we will have both Brian and Lance back soon.  We certainly are a better team when we have everyone healthy!

All of us are very excited about starting up with ACC play this weekend.  The start of conference play is always the beginning of a new season.  Our team is motivated to contend for the conference championship this season and, in order to do that, you have to play each game with a high level of intensity and togetherness.  The ACC is, year in and year out, loaded with great teams and programs.  This year is no different.  The names on the back of the jerseys may change, but the level of excellence in each of the programs in our league always remains the same.  When you add in the tough environments that welcome you at each and every venue, winning in the ACC is never easy.  It’s fun to be able to begin that journey with our current group.

In our first game, we have a talented Virginia team coming to Cameron led by All-American Point Guard Sean Singletary.  He is a terrific player and a senior leader.  They are a team that has alot of depth and really shoots the three-point shot well.  They have already won a tough road game at Arizona this year, so they know what it takes to win on the road.  In order for us to be successful, we are going to need all of our players to be ready to play at a high level.  We will also need Cameron to be alive and give our guys the support we need!!

Thanks for reading…  I’m off to practice to get started with the preparation…

Duhon starting for Bulls
In 2004, Chris Duhon was inserted into the Chicago Bulls starting lineup after an 0-9 start to the season. He, along with fellow rookie starter Luol Deng, went on to lead them to their first playoff appearance since 1998. This season, the Bulls are once again off to a slow start, and new coach Jim Boylan has once again made Duhon the starting point guard in hopes of sparking a similar turnaround. In the five games since, the Bulls are 3-2, including a two-point loss to Orlando and a double-overtime loss to red-hot Portland in a game in which Luol Deng left in the first half with a strained Achilles tendon. With Duhon steadying the offense and providing terrific team and on-the-ball defense, Chicago is now only three games out of a playoff spot with the bulk of the season ahead of them.
Men’s Health Highlights Dunleavy’s Summer Workout
Mike Dunleavy has stepped his game up this season in Indiana, averaging career highs of 17.4 points and 3.2 assists to go along with 5.6 rebounds per game while leading the surprising Pacers to within a half-game of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Dunleavy posted the Line of the Week Friday against Atlanta, leading his team to a win with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting (.750) and 4-of-6 from long range (.667), 12 rebounds, 1 steal and 3 assists. A big reason for the increased production is the dedication to improving his strength and athleticism that Mike displayed this summer. This article by Men’s Health highlights the work that Dunleavy and teammate Troy Murphy put in over the off-season.
Jones Enjoys Best Game of the Season
Dahntay Jones has proven to be a solid addition to the Sacramento Kings, moving right into the team’s main rotation and averaging over 12 minutes per game.  Last night, in his best game of the year, Jones scored 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting (8-11 FT) in almost 30 minutes of action.  The Kings fell at Chicago 94-93 with Jones’ former Duke teammate, Chris Duhon, getting a hand on a loose ball in the final seconds to prevent a last-second shot attempt by Sacramento.
Duke Blue Planet NBA Fantasy League Update
As mentioned above, Luol Deng sat out most of Chicago’s game against Portland with a strained Achilles tendon and is currently listed as day-to-day for the Bulls. Carlos Boozer, Corey Maggette, Grant Hill, Deng, and Mike Dunleavy, Jr. all had strong weeks to help Duke continue to distance itself from fourth-place Florida. With Elton Brand’s return to the court only about a month away, Duke is still lingering close enough to the lead to make a move at year’s end following the return of the All-Star power forward.
1.    Connecticut Huskies:  7919.3
2.    North Carolina Tar Heels:  7849.0
3.     Duke Blue Devils:  7276.2
4.    Florida Gators:  5692.7
5.    Arizona Wildcats:  5401.5
6.    Kentucky Wildcats:  5096.9
7.    Kansas Jayhawks:  4525.5
Scoring summary:  one point for each point scored, 1.5 point for each rebound, two points for each assist, steal or block, 0.5 points for each 3-pointer made, and -1.2 points for each turnover.  Field-goal percentage is included by subtracting 0.2 points for each field goal attempt and adding 0.5 points for each field goal made, which would mean you break even by shooting 40% from the field.

Quote of Week
“In just 22 years Luol Deng has moved from Sudan to Egypt, London to Tobacco Road, and now the Duke alum is a dominating presence on the Chicago Bulls… Not only does Deng play like a true professional, he acts like one too.”

Duke Rises to No. 2

Duke Rises to No. 2
Written by Dave Bradley

The AP poll was first introduced back in 1948 to provide a guide for newspapers to determine which scores and games they wanted to cover.  Now, the ESPN’s of the world use it to determine which teams may get the lead highlights on TV shows and websites.  So other than a few SportsCenter highlights, the polls this early aren’t a big deal.

While fans like to talk about it, our players seem less concerned.  Said Jon Scheyer, “The biggest thing I’ve learned is nobody is handed anything.  You deserve to win by working hard and just because you’re ranked No. 2 or a top seed doesn’t mean you’re going to win.   We need to go out and work for every game.  There is not a game that we can take for granted.”

The latest AP poll released Monday ranks the Blue Devils No. 2.  Here are a few other interesting polls, rankings and/or ratings at this point in the year…
